Literatură, literatură, literatură. Mai precis, am făcut o cură de Orson Scott Card în ultima vreme. Cred că e cazul să mă potolesc și să mai citesc și alți autori, așa că pentru luna următoare deja am planificat niște Philip K. Dick și niște chestii mai “serioase”. Dar până atunci, iată recomandările mele:
Empire – Orson Scott Card. The book follows U.S. Army Major Reuben Malich and U.S. Army Captain Bartholomew Coleman, both former Special Forces officers, as America falls into a civil war after the assassinations of both the American President and Vice President. A radical leftist army calling itself the Progressive Restoration takes over New York City and declares itself the rightful government of the United States.
Hidden Empire – Orson Scott Card. The war of words between right and left collapsed into a shooting war, and raged between the high-technology weapons on each side, devastating cities and overrunning the countryside. At the close of Empire, political scientist and government adviser Averell Torrent had maneuvered himself into the presidency of the United States. And now that he has complete power at home, he plans to expand American imperial power around the world.
Comentariul meu: Dacă nu mă înșel, Empire este primul roman din genul “speculative fiction” scris de Card pe care-l citesc. Și nu e rău deloc! Continuarea, Hidden Empire, văd că este plasat în “science fiction”, cel mai probabil din cauza echipamentelor pe care le folosesc soldații, deși tehnologia actuală permite fără probleme existența lor. Mă rog… Deși nu mă dau în vând după cărțile cu “mighty american hero soldier”, cărțile sunt reușite și le dau nota 9,5 (nota 10 pentru Empire și nota 9 pentru Hidden Empire). Merită citite!
A War of Gifts: An Ender Story – Orson Scott Card. At Battle School, the other students barely tolerate Zeck because of his strong religious beliefs and his refusal to fight in the Battle Room. On December fifth Zeck sees a Dutch boy put a Sinterklaas Day gift in another Dutch boy’s shoe. Because religious holidays are forbidden at Battle School and Zeck has been taught by his father that Santa Claus is evil, he decides to report the two boys to Colonel Graff. After the Colonel calls the boys in and reprimands them, they decide to rebel by getting everyone to celebrate Christmas. When Zeck complains to the authorities, they refuse to do anything.
Comentariul meu: Scurtă, intensă, povestea are loc în timpul descris în Ender’s Game și Ender’s Shadow. Fără alte comentarii, îi acord nota 9 (în principal pentru că, din cauza spațiului restrâns, caracterele nu sunt construite complet).
Ender in Exile – Orson Scott Card. One year after the Formics were defeated and the Battle School children return to Earth, Ender cannot do so because there would be wars over which country would keep Ender to use for their own ends. Ender is offered the Governorship of the first human colony to be planted on one of the Formics’ former worlds, a planet that would eventually become known as Shakespeare. His sister Valentine decides to accompany Ender on his journey because she is sick of being controlled by her older brother Peter, and because she wants to rekindle the relationship she lost with her little brother Ender.
Comentariul meu: Dacă Enderverse-ul nu era suficient de confuz, acest roman reușește să-l zăpăcească complet. Este practic un colaj din mai multe povestiri scurte, deja publicate, fiind de fapt un interludiu între Ender’s Game și Speaker for the Dead. E adevărat că adaugă amănunte acțiunilor și conturează un pic mai mult personajele (explicând cum au ajuns în Speaker…). Din păcate, timeline-ul este modificat pe ici, pe colo și, pentru cine a citit deja povestirile și restul romanelor, apar inconsistențe. Citit cronologic (după Game și inainte de Speaker), este ok, drept urmare nota 9.
