Fiind vară și fiindcă am fost și în concediu, era normal să citesc mai mult. De data asta, am aruncat deoparte orice citire tehnică sau de business și am servit doar literatură.
Deception Point – Dan Brown. Intelligence Analyst Rachel Sexton is in her mid-thirties, is single, and works for the NRO (National Reconnaissance Office). Her father, Senator Sedgewick Sexton, is a presidential candidate who is more popular than incumbent President of the United States Zachary Herney. The President sends her to the Arctic as part of a team of experts to confirm and authenticate findings made by NASA deep within the Milne Ice Shelf. NASA’s new Polar Orbiting Density Scanner (PODS), part of the Earth Observation System (EOS), a collection of satellites monitoring the globe for signs of large-scale change, has found an extremely dense spot in the Milne Ice Shelf. At this spot NASA discovers a very dense meteorite. In it are insect fossils very similar to, but not the same as, species on earth. NASA claims this as proof of extraterrestrial life.
Comentariul meu: Cu acest ultim roman, am terminat de citit tot ce a publicat Dan Brown până acum. Am spus-o deja, dar o repet: îmi place cum scrie – e ușor de înțeles, e relaxant, e captivant până la ultimele pagini, deși nu este neapărat un maestru al răsturnărilor de situație. Îi dau nota 9.

The woman who slowly kills her son – until he murders her, but she comes to visit him in the hospital anyway. Their enemies are powerful. Their lives are cruel. But you won’t forget the people of Capitol.
Comentariul meu: Să începem cu nota: 10. Sunt un fan al lui Orson Scott Card, iar această colecție de câteva schițe/nuvele arată cum își construiește universul în care plasează apoi alte romane. Fiecare dintre povestiri introduce un personaj, un eveniment sau o tehnologie. Nu sunt legate direct una de alta, deși unele din personaje se repetă sau se face referire la evenimente din altă poveste, iar în final rămâi cu impresia că Orson Scott Card are ceva în cap, ce încă nu ți-a dezvăluit.
The Worthing Series: Hot Sleep – Orson Scott Card. The book follows Jason Worthing, also known as Jazz, who is a boy growing up on Capitol, the capital planet of the Empire. Jas has “the swipe”, which is a genetic trait that allows for telepathy. The swipe is feared in the Empire, so those who possess it are executed. After being found out as a swipe, Jas tries to escape, which leads to his capture by Abner Doon, who helps him rise to prominence as a space pilot. Eventually, Abner sends Jason away as the head of a colony so that the swipe would become more widespread, but when his ship reaches the planet, he is attacked, and the memories of all but one of the three-hundred eleven colonists are destroyed and two-third of the colonist are killed or damaged beyond awakening. Jason prevails, however, leading to the survival of the colony, which he visits every several years, being on Somec the rest of the time. Eventually, Abner Doon comes and sees how Jason has done, and after Doon leaves, Jason takes his ship to the bottom of the ocean.
Comentariul meu: Deși romanul nu este neapărat o continuare a poveștilor din Capitol, atunci când îl citești ai un “Aha! moment” – începi să vezi ce univers și-a imaginat Orson Scott Card și cum anume se potrivesc în el poveștirile din Capitol. Hot Sleep construiește pe noțiunile și câteva din personajele din Capitol, pe care le dezvoltă complet, iar după ce îl termini începi să îți dorești să mai existe continuări (din păcate, nu sunt). Nota 10, desigur.
Alte 27 de povestiri de Orson Scott Card. Nu am o descriere pentru această colecție și nu am găsit-o nicăieri, este chiar posibil să fie o selecție neoficială, din diferite surse. Este vorba despre schițe și nuvele destul de scurte (toate 27 au în total 550 de pagini), cele mai multe dintre ele din genurile ficțiune, fantasy și horror, cu extrem de puține accente science ficțion. Nefiind exact stilul standard al lui Orson Scott Card, nu toate sunt reușite, unele părându-mi chiar “work in progress” sau încercarea autorului de a-și cristaliza niște idei. Per total au meritat însă citite, și drept urmare dau nota 8.
